BMI is the body mass index and is a useful way of assessing obesity. The BMI depends on the height and weight, and becomes less useful if you are particularly muscular (muscle weighs more than fat) or tall (over 6")
  • Under 19 (women)/20 (men) kg/m2 is considered underweight
  • 19 (women)/20 (men) to 25 kg/m2 is considered ideal
  • 25 to 30 kg/m2 is considered overweight
  • 30 to 35 kg/m2 is considered obese
  • Over 35 kg/m2 is considered morbidly obese (meaning obesity seriously affecting your health)
The health consequences of obesity are many, but my interest is in a condition called fatty liver (hepatic steatosis) which has been associated with the 'Metabolic Syndrome' or insulin resistance which is associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
